HISTORY
The building that today houses the “Pousada dos Lóios” is the old S. João Evangelista or Lóios Monastery of the Congregation of Cannons Regular (blue Cannons).
It was founded in 1487 by D. Rodrigo Melo, 1st Cannon of Olivença and constructed under the orders of D. João II, on the land where a part of the Castelo de Évora (of Arab origin) once sat. In 1834, with the royal order to close all Monasteries and Convents in Portugal, this Monastery was left uninhabited for quite some time.
In the 18th century, the Monastery underwent changes resulting from fire damage during the 1383-85 revolution and also the earthquake of 1755. In 1965, after the necessary remodelling and changes, the Monastery opened its doors again as the Pousada de Portugal.
